Description

To remain employed, employees have to upgrade their skills.

In today’s competitive world, businesses which has been around for a very long time may not continue be around forever. The victims include Walmart, Toys R Us and a few famous hand phone brands.

When companies are no longer competitive, this means jobs are no longer secure. The reason for uncompetitiveness may be due to many reasons but the resulting unemployed is really due to the person.

It is good to be reminded that the days where you do the same thing day in day out and get paid every month with increments every year are long gone.

Today, everyday you work, you should add value so that the company thinks of you as a talent rather than a ‘worker.’

Recently, the Human Resource Minister Kula Segaran has refuted claims that 30,000 people will become unemployed. He said that less than 24,000 unemployment positions were recorded last year. According to him, the unemployment rate shows nothing unusual, nothing frightening.

Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) executive director Shamsuddin Bardan on the other hand, had estimated that 30,000 workers are due to lose their jobs, citing the increasing cost of doing business as the main reason for the alarming number.

Shamsuddin said the economy within and without Malaysia was a challenge for employers to maintain their profitability.

A check at job portal, JobStreet.com reveals that the number of positions which companies are hiring stands at over 25,000 currently.

In other words, the total number of jobs available are far higher than the number of applicants. This is just one job portal.

Even if the 30,000 number of unemployed prediction does happen, the most important thing is for the economy to grow and thereby produce more more job opportunities so that the affected people can move on to the next job quickly.

As for those who are gainfully employed today, do reflect on what you have been doing differently this year compared to the last. It’s all about being competitive.
