With a little extra care, your washing machine can last for years.

The lifespan of the average washing machine is about 14 years but it will break down before its time if it is used incorrectly and not properly maintained.

By that same token, you can preserve the quality of your clothes too if you wash them with care.

Here are some tips to extend the life of your washing machine and keep your clothes in good condition for longer.

1. Too much detergent and bleach

Most people assume that adding extra detergent to the laundry load will make their clothes cleaner or brighter.

However, extra laundry detergent can cause excessive suds to develop, which prevents collars or other areas from rinsing completely clean. It can also create more dirt and harmful germs.

Excessive use of bleach meanwhile can ruin clothes, lead to allergic reactions and damage your washing machine.

So hold back on the amount of detergent and bleach you use to preserve the quality of your clothes and keep your washing machine in good condition.

2. Infrequent or no cleaning

A washing machine should be cleaned at least once a month.

Harmful bacteria, limescale, mould and bad odours can develop if the washing machine is not cleaned regularly. It should be cleaned at least once a month to prevent a build-up that could eventually clog the machine.

A quick hack to eliminate germs and mould is to use vinegar and baking soda – natural ingredients that will not damage the machine.

Put half a cup of baking soda and one litre of vinegar into the washing machine and set the water temperature to 90ºC on a long cycle.

3. Lack of maintenance

Small problems can turn into bigger ones without prompt repairs.

A common issue is not properly caring for and repairing a washing machine correctly. If it starts acting up — not turning on, emitting unusual smells or strange noises — book a professional to inspect and fix it immediately.

Ignoring these signs can make small problems turn into bigger ones. Proper maintenance will help prolong the life of your washing machine.
